On Tuesday, February 22nd, New Zealand 's second largest city, Christchurch , experienced a devastating earthquake. Scores of people were killed and injured, and dozens remain missing. Large sections of the city are reduced to rubble, and the city's iconic cathedral destroyed. The damage is calculated at billions of dollars. People have lost their homes and livelihoods, and temporary shelters have been erected in the city's parks.
This is the second biggest quake to strike Christchurch in six months - the first in September struck in the middle of the night, when people were largely indoors, and remarkably there were no fatalities. The February 22nd quake struck during the working day, when the city was teeming with people, and while slightly less in its intensity, it was far more destructive. Buildings were already structurally compromised by the first quake, and the movement was at a shallow depth in the earth.
Several prominent New Zealand performers living in New York are presenting a concert to raise funds to help the people of Christchurch rebuild their futures, in what will be a very slow return to any sort of normality. These artists believe that this event will help to bring New Zealanders and their friends in New York together, and act as a form of healing for those whose loved ones are far away, reeling and suffering in the wake of this tragic natural disaster.
